Declan Fairbrother is 12 years old and the youngest child of Mary and Barry Fairbrother. He is the only one of the children to raise a hand in farewell when he unknowingly sees his father leaving the house for the last time. After his father's death, Declan was very troubled (his mother mentions how he had come into bed with her a couple of days after Barry's death.)
